Welcome to WiSE: How Women in Self Storage Europe Began

The self storage industry is built on connections, and that’s exactly where WiSE began.

WiSE (Women in Self Storage Europe) was created to bring women together across the industry. A space to meet, share experiences, and build relationships at every stage of their careers. It didn’t start with a formal plan, it started with a conversation.

Back to the beginning

In 2023, at an industry conference, Simone Smith (United Storage Systems) Jill Leckie (Developed by Me), and Kristi Adams (OpenTech Alliance) met and, over a few drinks - as many good ideas start - realised they shared a common experience.

They were building their careers in a male-dominated industry, where opportunities to meet and support other women weren’t always easy to find.

Early in her career, Simone felt incredibly lucky to have formed friendships with both Jill and Kristi. That support network made a real difference, not just professionally, but personally too. It brought confidence, guidance, and a sense of belonging within the industry.

Not everyone has that.

So they decided to create it.

The first WiSE meet-up

There were no big expectations, just a simple plan to organise drinks and take a moment before a busy few days at the conference.

But as people began to arrive, turnout exceeded expectations, and it quickly became clear there was real interest in continuing these meet-ups. Women from across the industry came together, from those just starting out to those in senior roles - creating space to learn from one another.

Looking ahead

What started as a simple idea is now a growing community of women across the self storage industry.

With each event, more women join - from those attending their first conference to those who have been in the industry for decades.

WiSE exists to ensure women in the self storage industry are supported, heard, and given real opportunities to grow and succeed.

And this is only the beginning.

We’re building something long-term - with plans to grow our community, expand events, and create more opportunities for women across the sector.
